MAXIMA CLEAN UP
PRODUCT: A multi-purpose degreaser is a heavy-duty, emulsion-type cleaner
designed to clean chains without harming rubber O-rings or metal surfaces. Maxima
Clean Up quickly dissolves and targets hard-to-clean buildup on your chains.
POSITIVE: We use Clean Up for a lot more than just chains. The bike pretty much
gets the smear, though we concentrate on dirty engines, aluminum frames and the running gear. Spray it on, let it set for 60 seconds and then pressure wash it off. Nasty
goo is handled quite succinctly, and Clean Up works well on aluminum (frames and
NEGATIVE: The smell is offensive, and if you’re not careful, you’ll blow through a
can way too quickly.
BOTTOM LINE: A 20-ounce can of Clean Up retails for $9.95, and you can find it for
a buck less online. This isn’t a lubrication product that is crucial (i.e., filter oil or brake
fluid), but it fills a niche that makes sense. We are riding dirt bikes, and they do get
dirty, don’t they? The big question here is whether you’re better off going with a Home
Deport remedy like Simple Green. We have had excellent results with it, but have also
uncovered the fact that it is really hard on aluminum frames, swingarms and rims, and
that helps enforce products designed for dirty machines, like Maxima’s Clean Up, fit
into our world quite nicely. ;
MATRIX 1.7 PRE-RIDE TREATMENT
PRODUCT: This product sprays on before you hit the practice track or is
used in muddy conditions. It is designed to prevent mud buildup.
POSITIVE: The Matrix folks will tell you that their Pre-Ride treatment is like
spraying Pam on your machine. We sprayed it under the fenders, rims, engine
and frame. Like spraying Pam on your frying pan, it works.
NEGATIVE: At $14.95 a bottle, this is a pricey consumable, and don’t get it
on your brakes! The stuff is slippery, and we had to work hard to clean the
rotors of over-spray and still had issues with weak brake performance.
BOTTOM LINE: We’ve come to rely and trust in the Matrix line of lubes.
The Pre-Ride spray works better when your machine starts off clean; once it
gets dusty, you’ll notice a brownish film deadening the color.
BEL-RAY BRAKE & PARTS CLEANER
PRODUCT: Bel-Ray Brake & Parts Cleaner is an
aerosol degreaser specifically designed to clean and
degrease all metal surfaces. It cleans brake components and removes
carbon and oil buildup, drying in seconds and leaving no residue. This multi-purpose degreaser
can be used to clean fouled spark plugs, carburetor parts and other engine parts, as well as other
areas that require a quick-drying spray.
POSITIVE: Contact cleaner is one of the most abused and used products by factory mechanics,
shop mechanics and hard-core enthusiasts. Over the years the strength seems to have been
knocked down somewhat, but how many products clean plastics, a filthy spark plug, brake pads
and shoot down a wasp? Bel-Ray’s Brake & Parts Cleaner performs totally up to speed.
NEGATIVE: The 13-ounce can sells for a retail price of $7.99,
which is a shade lower than Maxima sells their 20-ounce can.
BOTTOM LINE: The product works and is an effective tool for
the moto-head. Shop it out for pricing since there is a wide line
and most of the contact cleaners all basically perform the same
