Will Roczen miss the button? The new KTM
450SX-F should be the lightest bike in the
class despite having electric-start.

This will be the basis for Troy Lee’s new KTM
team. Either the same engineers from the
450 project built the 250, or they had the
same instructions. The engine length was
reduced by 20mm, and it got a new 44mm
Keihin throttle body with a new engine-management system. It also gets multiple
maps, including a launch control, and KTM
again uses the words “mass centralization”
in its description of the clutch and crank.
That’s also mentioned in regard to
the silencer, which is 40mm shorter.
The head, pipe, radiators, cams and
valve train are all new. In the chassis
department, the steel frame might
look similar to the old one, but its
flex characteristics have changed.
KTM engineers say that the
harshness is actually the fault of
the frame’s stiffness. The area
around the steering head has been
completely reworked, and now the
torsional rigidity is said to be 20
percent greater, while the longitudinal
stiffness is decreased by 30 percent.

The list of small details that received
attention is long; things like mud scrapers
on the footpegs to keep them from sticking, a
snap-in air-filter element and ODI lock-on grips.
The 250 is said to be 7 pounds lighter than the
current model. The prices will be $10,199 for the
450 and $9299 for the 250. High? Certainly. But,
they’ll be sold out in a flash. ❏
