Bob Hannah, Lake Whitney, Texas, 1981. Bob was returning to action following a devastating water- skiing accident where he broke his right leg in 12
places. Bob was with his good buddy Marty Tripes, who
was driving the boat when Hannah carved too close to
the shore, clipped a boulder and shattered his leg badly
enough that doctors didn’t think he would ever have
a chance to return to racing. Hannah had completely
dominated the 250 class in ’ 78 and ’ 79, capturing both
the outdoor national titles and the Supercross champion-
ships. He did not return to racing until the 1981 season,
and this photo was taken at Lake Whitney, Texas, where
Bob took home second place behind Kent Howerton.
While he never won another championship, Bob did win
20 more times, including a Motocross des Nations win
mounted on a Suzuki RM125 in 1987. ❏
