PRODUCT: The Militia X shoe is part of the DVS Dirt
Series line. The Dirt Series line was created to meet the
demands of the motocross, off-road and BMX community.
Every shoe is made with materials that are durable, water-repellant and washable. A key feature is the DVS Snap-Dry
system that has a spongy material in the tongue that captures water and can be removed for quick drying.
POSITIVE: “Wow” is the first word that comes to mind.
The Militia X delivers on the DVS line’s promise. You can
trash these shoes in the dirt and wash them off with a hose
or in the washing machine, making them look new again.
It’s nice to see DVS collaborating with top motocross, off-road, BMX and freestyle athletes to get their input to make
specific products to meet their needs. The Dirt Series
shoes come in multiple styles, so if the Militia X isn’t to
your liking, DVS probably has a shoe that is. With an average price around $60, style and function won’t empty your
bank account, either.
NEGATIVE: If you are not accustomed to wearing flat-footed skate shoes, your feet might need a little time to
adjust. If the Velcro strap that holds the Snap-Dry system
in place is not closed properly, it can snag on socks or
scratch the front of bare feet.
BOTTOM LINE: The staff of Dirt Bike applauds DVS for
not only the Militia X but the entire line of Dirt Series shoes.
If you have a loved one who plays or works in the dirt and
has trouble keeping his shoes looking presentable, we
strongly recommend checking out DVS’ Militia X Dirt Series
PRODUCT: The Scary Fast Grunt is a tapered exhaust
flange for the KTM 450SX-F (they also have them for the 250
and 350) that targets controlling and enhancing the bottom
roll-on power. The KTM 450SX-F uses a large header where
it exits out of the cylinder, and this high-flow design tends to
let power snarl rather than flow. Scary Fast came up with a
way to smooth the response, let it roll on sooner and altogether make the hit more useable via their tapered exhaust
manifold. The hard-anodized aluminum unit was designed
with a dimension and taper between the cylinder and the
pipe that helps the stock header act like it has more taper,
which effectively smooths the blast and lets it roll out just a
fraction earlier than stock.
POSITIVE: Good results here. Installation requires you
to remove the header/mid-pipe, and then remove the
stock exhaust manifold. Fit on the Grunt, and then refit the
pipe. It seems quite mysterious that this small device can
actually alter the powerband in a positive manner, but it
does. It’s not earth-shattering, more like subtle and
smooth, yet the viscous roar that the stocker emits gets
moved ever so slightly lower in the powerband and has
been relieved of a small percentage of its abruptness.
We also tested it on an FMF system (MegaBomb/4.1)
and it worked well. The FMF system already has a more
tapered header section that helps to broaden the hard hit,
but the Grunt piggybacks with it and gives it an even
lower pull that is strong yet tractable.
NEGATIVE: A hundred clams ($99.95) for a rather small
piece makes the Grunt growl when the horsepower comes
BOTTOM LINE: Very positive here, especially with the
stock header. While it won’t bring the 450SX-F into the
enduro-lug zone, it does soften and broaden the hard-edge hit of the stocker. ;
