PRODUCT: The Emperor Racing heavy-duty skid plate is constructed
out of 3/16-inch aluminum with a scorpion carved into each wing of the
side protection arms. Each unit is hand-TIG-welded, uses all-aluminum
mounting brackets with metric fasteners, and comes with foam tape to
ride between the frame and skid plate to help reduce vibration. Also, each
unit comes with a block of open-celled foam to place between the plate
and the engine to keep mud and debris from invading and adding weight.
POSITIVE: We tested the Emperor heavy-duty skid plate on our KTM
450XC-W. The install was quick and dirty. We ran the foam tape the
length of the skid plate, inserted the block of open-celled foam, and
tightened the plate via the fasteners. The front-vented mud guard dips
back toward the engine and does a respectable job of keeping gunk out.
The side wings offer superb protection for the water pump and ignition,
and the strong mounting system keeps the unit snug under attack. It
stays in place, offers good clearance in boulders and loves to take a hit.
NEGATIVE: The $142.95 price tag seems steep—until you talk to a
guy who just blew a hole in his cases, bled out the oil and fried the entire
engine (true story). Then it seems more than fair.
BOTTOM LINE: We’ve been hammering the Emperor Racing
heavy-duty skid plate and we like it. Enough said.
